Lithography
This piece was a reflective piece where I was trying to find the place where all my surrealist creatures live. Through the process of self reflection I realized that as a kid growing up in a ranch in Oklahoma, I would often escape into the forest. There I would imagine a world with fairies, flowers that came to life, and trees that could see.

I didn’t know it then, but I had a lot more to learn from these bee’s than just how to execute a new form of printmaking. I found them in the Winter, a time that I did not expect them to be around given the actual climate of the world. But there they were, swimming through the flowers, doing what bee’s do. Their extinction is not only detrimental to my well being, but for that of the entire world. The slightest change in their environment and they could go extinct. I realized that their world, my world, our world is very fragile. The slightest shift and my entire life and routine can fall apart, or the bee’s could go extinct and the whole world could collapse. That’s what the process of creating this print felt like. The world as I knew it was falling apart due to COVID-19. Somehow, even amongst the chaos that was happening I was able to successfully print my bee’s. Like them I focused on my purpose and adapted to the ever changing climate of this world.

These prints are part of a transformative series. Through the process of erasing and etching the stone I was able to preserve the hand in which the flowers are blooming from while capturing the constant changes that come with growing. My understanding of growth intertwines my understanding of the natural flow of the universe. Flowers bloom, they grow, then they die, only to begin the cycle again. There’s a beauty to temporality. If things were to stay the same life would become dull. The act of growing can at times be painful, but it’s a beautiful process to witness. The act of dying is a result of living.
