Southern Exposure: Teaching Artist with Mission Girls
10/2022 - 12/2022
I had the honor to teach 20 young women (12-18) from Mission Girls, Young Queens on the Rise as part of the Artist in Education program with Southern Exposure.
In this class we explored what identity, culture, and community looked like for us individually and collectively.
We began by connecting with our ancestors by building an altar for Dia de Los Muertos. We then explored issues that we felt passionate about in order to create and screenprint our own activist designs, and concluded the class with public art and stenciling.
As part of our last class students had the opportunity to showcase and speak on the artwork and lessons learned from the class. Students decided to title the show "The World is Mi Familia" after reflecting on our class altar and what we were able to accomplish working collectively.
