Children of the Elements
40 x 40
Diptych
Hand Carved and Laser Cut
two color blend roll
Winter 2020
This piece depicts Fire, Air, Earth and Water interacting with their environment, in harmony. I was trying to embody each element and depict them in ways that I felt represent their temperaments. Fire is using the sun as a kite and Air is creating tornadoes and blowing wind to fuel Fire. Water and Earth are more mellow, Water being pulled up by the full moon and Earth sleeping for the night. In the center is laser engraved zodiac calendar, each element in the zodiac is represented by a natural element. Therefore, everyone is a child of the element because everyone is either a Fire, Air, Earth and Water sign and according to astrology we are influenced by these elements. If the moon influences the tides then who’s to say that our solar system doesn’t influence us?

Self Portrait
Summer 2018
This is a reflective self portrait where I was thinking about my maternal lineage. I am the third generation of ‘Alejandra’, named after my mother who was named after her mother. In Mexican culture ‘Brujas’ are seen as both healers and evil, but they are always women. Despite this being the general idea surrounding Brujas, I actually find them to be quite strong. Not only do they provide healing for their community, but they trust themselves in knowing the boundary between light and dark.

This book explores the place that I created for myself as a child to escape to. I have always been fascinated with the ability to dream of other places without knowing if they exist or not. This piece shows characters that occupy this space.

This piece captures the feeling of contentment, appreciation, and growth that I was experiencing while studying abroad in Japan. With this traditional Japanese print method I was able to explore the possibility of blending colors in one piece. This piece is inspired by the song Lost by Frank Ocean.
